For more than 70 years, The Arc Jefferson - St. Lawrence (www.thearcjslc.org) has been a trailblazer in advocacy and services for people with developmental disabilities. The Arc Jefferson - St. Lawrence has a tradition of honoring the determination of people, while providing quality care and innovative supports for people and their families. Over the years, the leadership team has evolved to implement a series of strategic initiatives and reorganized to align with policy changes in the disability field.
Beginning as a small group of parents who were seeking quality services for their children, the agency has grown to serve more than 1,500 people at locations in Jefferson and St. Lawrence Counties. Today, the agency employs over 1,200 staff and has an annual budget of $85 million. Those dedicated families started a legacy of respect and support for fulfilling people’s goals. The agency still proudly offers personalized services for all age groups and types of disabilities.
The Arc Jefferson - St. Lawrence continues to modernize program offerings to enhance their standing as a vital provider of service options for people with disabilities in the North Country. During this transformation, The Arc Jefferson - St. Lawrence upgraded technology throughout the agency. Renovations are being completed to provide state of the art facilities for the people supported. Programs and services continue to grow to meet the needs of people facing aging concerns; while adjusting to help young people with disabilities to reach their personal and employment aspirations.
In order to maintain the meaningful programs on which thousands of people and their families depend upon, the agency will be advocating for critical funding in the New York State 2025 budget. Supporters will be asked to contact their legislators to fund three specific requests. The first is a 7.8% increase in rates for services to offset years of underfunding. The requests also include starting a “wage” commission to examine pay for positions in human services, including Direct Support Professionals. The final request is for capital financing to support environmental and infrastructure upgrades for providers, such as The Arc Jefferson - St. Lawrence.
