The Arc Jefferson – St. Lawrence (www.thearcjslc.org) dedicated a Sensory Garden at the St. Lawrence County main office building located at 6 Commerce Lane in Canton in honor of former board member, Patricia Campanella in recognition for her 37 years of volunteerism with the agency.
Mrs. Patricia Campanella advocated for reform to better support people with developmental disabilities locally as well as in Albany, and Washington, D.C. She served as the agency’s Board President for over three decades. During her tenure, the organization grew from supporting 100 people to over 1,000 people as St. Lawrence NYSARC and Jefferson Rehabilitation Center unified to become The Arc Jefferson – St. Lawrence.
“Pat is an inspiration who has shown family members and friends of people with disabilities how to be strong leaders and fierce advocates,” said Jackie Sauter, The Arc Jefferson – St. Lawrence’s Board President. “Our organization has truly benefitted from Pat’s leadership, attention to detail, and no-nonsense approach to problem solving.”
The Patricia Campanella Sensory Garden is an accessible, inviting space for people supported by the agency to spend time outdoors. It has a water fountain, variety of greenery, benches, and a wheelchair accessible patio with an open-sided pavilion.
“Pat has been an integral part of decisions that transformed the disability field and spent countless hours advocating for rights and integrated services,” said Lynn Pietroski, The Arc Jefferson – St. Lawrence Chief Executive Officer. “She worked tirelessly to meet new fiscal and philosophical challenges in the developmental disabilities field, supporting staff efforts to provide quality care to people receiving services.”
The Patricia Campanella Sensory Garden is located at the Commerce Lane, Canton site and is home to several programs for adults with disabilities including Day Habilitation and Clinical Services such as Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and Speech Therapy.
